Dental cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) is a special type of x-ray used when regular dental or facial x-rays are not sufficient.
CBCT technology gives us the ability to visualize the three-dimensional anatomy of the teeth, jaws and facial skeleton. Other vital structures such as nerve canals, maxillary sinuses are visible as well.
CBCT enhances the diagnosis of different issues, such as lesions of the bone, sinuses, and fractures of teeth or bone due to trauma. We can also look for impacted teeth and expose them surgically with minimal treatment.
Treatment planning for a dental implant is a game-changer. We can now plan the placement of an implant considering important neighboring structures such as nerves, teeth, and sinuses. This incredible diagnostic took also helps us to determine the need and advisability of a bone graft or other treatment prior to implant placement. Our patients benefit greatly from this technology and this also helps us to avoid future problems!
One of the biggest advantages when we compare CBCT with a medical CT is the low radiation. Our CBCT emits 10 times LESS radiation than a typical medical CT.
